Sustainability at Artisans Secret Distillery
Artisans Secret Distillery (ASD) has now been recognised internationally by the Spirit of Craft (SOCraft) Awards for our sustainability processes, receiving their Green Ring on our gin awards in the SOCraft Awards 2025-26. We are deeply committed to sustainability, ensuring that every aspect of our production aligns with environmentally responsible practices. Here’s a closer look at our sustainability commitments:
Choice of Production Materials
ASD prioritizes the use of organic and locally sourced botanicals. We grow many of our own ingredients, including fruits, flowers, herbs, and spices, adhering to organic principles. This not only supports local agriculture but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation. Out of the botanicals we grow, if we have any excess produce, we can use our dehydrators or freeze any excess for out of season use. Additionally, we produce our own base alcohol in-house, ensuring complete control over the quality and sustainability of materials. We also choose suppliers who use recycled cardboard packaging for our product gift boxes and repurpose cardboard packaging when making our own gift tags.
Waste Management
Our waste management process is dedicated to minimizing waste through innovative practices. We collect and filter rainwater on-site for use in the distillation processes. Condenser cooling water is zero waste via a closed recycle system connected to 50,000L of stored rainwater.
All distillation by-products are repurposed to either feed our chickens and/or composted to enrich our land, promoting a circular economy. This meticulous approach ensures that nothing goes to waste and that the land remains fertile and productive. Should we have excess spent grain in the future beyond what we can repurpose on-site, we will be able to donate this to local farms. Further initiatives include offering our local customers a discount on their next purchase for any return of our empty bottles, no single-use plastic tasting cups for tasting sessions, as well as composting or recycling suitable packaging materials.
Emission Management
During the building of our distillery, we included the use of low VOC paint, LED lighting and jacketed hot water insulation. We choose eco-certified natural supplies for gardening weed control along with thick layer mulching. ASD is committed to reducing its carbon emissions. By using renewable resources such as our 40Kw solar power and battery system, and adopting energy-efficient practices, we minimize their environmental impact. Our aim was to use 100% renewable energy by the end of 2025, which we have now achieived. Our small-batch production method not only ensures high-quality spirits but also reduces energy consumption compared to large-scale industrial operations. We have also chosen to build our distillery on the property where we live, thus avoiding emissions related to daily commuting from and to the distillery.
Support for the Local Community
We actively support the local community by sourcing ingredients from nearby organic producers and participating in local farmers and craft markets and events. Our commitment to local production fosters economic growth and strengthens community ties. Additionally, we engage with the community sharing our knowledge of sustainable distillation practices and promoting environmental stewardship, through the people we meet at our events and local markets, through our advertising and with the local businesses we engage with.
